The first step was steam-powered vehicles. It is believed that initial attempts to produce them are held in China in the late seventeenth century, but the earliest documentary records on the use of this driving force dating from 1769, when the French writer and inventor Nicholas-Joseph Cugnot introduced first steam-powered vehicle. It was a tricycle around 4.5 tonnes, with wooden wheels and iron wheels, the engine was mounted on the crankshaft of the wheels of a cart to carry guns. Its prototype crashed and a second machine was destroyed in 1771, but the idea would be taken up and developed in England in the following years.
